The richly illustrated prayer books and religious texts provide a window into the themes that dominated in those early years &#8211; childbirth, obedience, self-sacrifice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-wordpress wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-hyperallergic\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"dxr2YSA3XT\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hyperallergic.com\/385206\/illuminating-women-getty-center\/\">Tracing the Lives of Women in Medieval Manuscript Illustrations<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" src=\"https:\/\/hyperallergic.com\/385206\/illuminating-women-getty-center\/embed\/#?secret=dxr2YSA3XT\" data-secret=\"dxr2YSA3XT\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" title=\"&#8220;Tracing the Lives of Women in Medieval Manuscript Illustrations&#8221; &#8212; Hyperallergic\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Women themselves, mostly connected to nunneries but not always, were involved in creating these books. Fast forward to a skeleton find in North-Rhine Westphalia: the woman turns out to have a <em>blue tooth<\/em>, when examined. It\u2019s rich in iron and magnesium, and it\u2019s possible to trace the ratio of those two elements to specific mining spots in northeast Afghanistan. It was a rare and expensive substance available only to the most highly skilled illustrators. Anthropologists had originally investigated the plaque of this woman to determine medieval diet.
