Part of Hamburg’s\u00a0museum mile, these two beautiful structures were built between 1911 and 1913 as market halls. The hall for contemporary art is airy and light and welcoming despite its\u00a0industrial bones. It is\u00a0often used for site specific installations; when I was last there, Anthony Gormley exposited a project,\u00a0Field\u00a0<\/em>Horizons,\u00a0<\/i>where a mirrored horizontal surface had been suspended\u00a0across the length and with of the hall. Clad in socks,\u00a0you could walk and slightly swing in space with light reflecting all around you. It was magical.<\/p>\n

If you are lucky enough to travel to Hamburg by May 14th, you can attend the opening of\u00a0http:\/\/www.deichtorhallen.de\/index.php?id=478&L=1<\/a>\u00a0(link in english) Andreas Slominski’s new installation,\u00a0The O of the Door.\u00a0<\/em>The German title is\u00a0Das \u00dc<\/em>\u00a0des T\u00fcrstehers (<\/em>the doorman, or bouncer, NOT the door!) <\/em>But independent of lazy translation, I can’t figure out for the life of me what that title has to do with the content of the exhibit \u00a0– 100 portable toilet stalls symbolizing urban development – and, for that matter what do\u00a0they\u00a0<\/em>have to do with the growth of our cities? I would probably know more if I could visit and discover\u00a0the association between port-a-potties and art. I\u00a0will report in time.<\/p>\n
