In August of that year atomic bombs were deployed over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing over 100.000 people immediately, 10s of thousands through radiation exposure later, and devastated most of the attacked cities. Current talk of &#8220;Let&#8217;s make America great again!&#8221; hints at a willingness to repeat this kind of strategic annihilation, and one wonders if and what we&#8217;ve learned from history, if anything at all;\u00a0it also makes Freud seem quite prescient.<\/p>\n<p>Jenkins&#8217;\u00a0<em>The Armed Man<\/em> devotes two movements to the horror\u00a0caused by nuclear incendiary devices, A<em>ngry Flames (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Fy3K9wbHA7w\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Fy3K9wbHA7w<\/a>)\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Torches (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=roNU_ORGTSk\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=roNU_ORGTSk<\/a>)<\/em>. I configured the landscape in the montage <em>Angry Flames<\/em> as some kind of Rohrschach depiction in reference to the Freudian analysis. I added photographs of figures from a sculpture which has an interesting history. A war memorial in Hamburg, celebrating soldiers with the slogan &#8220;Germany must live even if we have to die,&#8221; is now prominently faced with a &#8220;<em>counter-memorial,<\/em>&#8221; a sculpture by Alfre Hrdlicka that depicts the Hamburg firestorm (the largest areal bombing before Dresden and Hiroshima by allied forces) and the loss of life when concentration camp inmates were put on board of a ship that the British sank.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For\u00a0<em>Torches<\/em> I used a photograph of an amazing exhibit I saw in Paris, that documented a different kind of loss of life:\u00a0Prune Nourry&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Terracotta Daughters.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>(<\/em><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.prunenourry.com\/en\/projects\/terracotta-daughters\">http:\/\/www.prunenourry.com\/en\/projects\/terracotta-daughters<\/a>.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The artist created over a hundred of these girls to point to selective abortion practices in\u00a0Asia, which have far reaching consequences.<\/p>\n<p><em><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-269 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.heuermontage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_1765.jpg?resize=523%2C392&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"IMG_1765\" width=\"523\" height=\"392\" \/>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Freud wrote in\u00a0Civilization and Its Discontents\u00a0(1930), \u201cThe present cultural state of America would give us a good opportunity for studying the damage to civilization which is thus to be feared.\u201d His enduring\u00a0nightmare, that America, with its notions of Exceptionalism\u00a0and Manifest Destiny, would be \u201cgain[ing] control over the forces of nature to such an extent that [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":296,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[9,36],"tags":[55,56,54,57,58],"class_list":["post-263","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-art","category-politics","tag-freud","tag-hiroshima","tag-jenkins-the-armed-man","tag-manifest-destiny","tag-prune-nourry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v26.6 (Yoast SEO v27.2) -
