I saw them in Italy, France, Germany and Austria. \u00a0Each of these countries has their own arsenal of swear words. But the functions of swear words are universal. \u00a0“We tend to think of swear words as one entity, but they actually serve several distinct functions<\/em>. Steven Pinker, in The Stuff of Thought, lists five different ways we can swear: \u201cdescriptively (Let\u2019s fuck), idiomatically (It\u2019s fucked up), abusively (Fuck you\u2026!), emphatically (This is fucking amazing), and cathartically (Fuck!!!).<\/em>\u201d None of these functions\u00a0require swearwords.”<\/p>\n
