RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Selasphorus rufus<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dear Albuquerque Garden Center,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last month I purchased a hummingbird feeder<\/p>\n\n\n\n

for $19.95. It was just like the original Lawrence J. Webster<\/p>\n\n\n\n

designed for his wife in Boston in 1929. I filled the feeder<\/p>\n\n\n\n

with one part refined white sugar and four parts water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Well, the homemade nectar has fermented in the July heat<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and all the little birds swerve in the sky. They\u2019re saying<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the present doesn\u2019t exist. What is a current moment<\/p>\n\n\n\n

when your heart beats 1200 times per minute?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

As Janis said from the train, Tomorrow never happens.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s all the same fucking day, man.<\/em> Birds got their own<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ball and chain. For the hummingbirds, it\u2019s an improv<\/p>\n\n\n\n

of locating yourself. Please hurry. Don\u2019t walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fly with 53 wingbeats per second, all in a figure 8,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a flapping M\u00f6bius strip. They\u2019ve broken through infinity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your unshaven face flushes red with drink,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

they\u2019ll join you on the patio. They buzz by your ears<\/p>\n\n\n\n

with sayings about the space-time, typically called \u201cnow,\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and ask you to ask yourself, \u201cWhen am I?\u201d When<\/p>\n\n\n\n

you perceive the present, it\u2019s already a recollection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rufous and I send you this thank you note<\/p>\n\n\n\n

from the past; we will recommend the Webster feeder to all<\/p>\n\n\n\n
